A styled wedding photo shoot in blue hues ...behind the scenes

Updated: Jan 21, 2020

I was delighted to be asked by Helen at Empirical Events to design the flowers for a styled wedding shoot at the Hydro Hotel in Eastbourne, an elegant Sussex wedding venue with fabulous sea views.

Being right at the height of the busy wedding season I thought it would be too much to take on, with lots of Sussex weddings coming up. But I am so glad I did. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable, full of laughter and hard work filled days, working with lots of talented Sussex wedding suppliers. I met the lovely and very talented Jacqulyn Hamilton. Jacqulyn created the romantic blue theme inspired by the grandeur of the hotel's blue Wedgwood Ballroom.

She documented the day beautifully with her photography. So beautifully that it's going to be featured in Wedding Ideas Magazine's July edition. I was really blown away by how she captured my flowers and the essence of the day.

Being a floral designer means spending quite a bit of time on your knees -snipping, adjusting and making sure flowers and ribbons all behave. For this bouquet and the style of the shoot, I used lots of pastel coloured blooms using a homemade armature with florist wire to give each bloom a chance to shine with lots of natural movement. A light and easy design to carry.

A big blue blowsy hydrangea, set off by cheeky lime green gelder roses and decidly chic pale mauve Menta roses - all kept in order by fabulous silk velvet hand-dyed ribbons by Kate Cullen, aptly called Hydrangea Blue and Nude.

Being a Floral Designer also means multi-tasking is required... def needed to carry all props and designs while carrying my trusted handbag (containing vital tools like scissors), confettis, floral hoop, bridal bouquet and balancing essential reading glasses on top of my head...

And of course another perk of the job was pinning a buttonhole on the gorgeous Matt - our very good humoured model. The buttonhole had bluey-mauvey delicate Nigella flowers (Love in the Mist) and beautifully textured Stachys leaves (Lambs' Ears).

Sneak peek at this gorgeous cake by Sylvia's Kitchen around which I arranged a beautiful collection of glass vases - how effective is that pink Astilbe against the stunning colour of the cake!

And after a few very windswept photos at Beachy Head, both the groom's hair and the Lambs" Ears buttonhole needed some touching up... still not bad for a very windy cliff top shoot!

Be sure to pick you issue of Wedding Ideas Magazine on 5th July to see more!
